The Custom Work Page appears, then…
The different styles of long tail C serial numbers appear. But I am only showing the first two…
Notice that the first picture has an R in a circle. This indicates that the long tail C serial number is a registered trademark. I have documented 944 knives with this mark at this time. The second long tail C does not have the registered mark, and I have only found 17 of those to document at this time.
Here’s the skinny on this. When the long tail C was first used on knives, the factory said that knives with a long tail C were official Case Collectables. I take this to mean that they were the total creations of the factory. I have only documented knives without the R in the years 1986 and 1987. By 1988 the R is in place on the knives I have seen. So, maybe at the start the factory applied for a trademark, and it took two years to get it. Or, they applied after they had been using it for a while. I have only seen 17 knife variations without the R and they are all in knives dated 86 and 87. These knives are a unique kind of transition, and I believe they are quite collectable. You can follow the trail I laid out, and see the 17 variations so far. If you have any different ones, please send me some pictures, so I can add them for future collectors.
The details of more than 130 years of factory production can be elusive, but I try to get as much right as possible. As my friend Tommy Rex Schnable says The BladeMaster has got KnifeDB almost three quarters of the way to nearly perfect.
